On the planet Summa Nulla (crossroads of the galaxy, highpoint of nothing), someone is manipulating the media. Ruby, tough, smart, sexy detective that she is, is hired to track down the male-factors. The swinging Android Sisters perform satirical songs as Ruby encounters some pretty weird planetary inhabitants on her quest for truth and the intergalactic way.

Ruby 1 The Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe (Audible Audio Edition) Meatball Fulton ZBS Foundation Books

Ruby is tough and smart and doesn’t take S from anyone. She is a galactic gumshoe (detective). It takes a strong self-reliant woman to succeed as a gumshoe in a crazy galaxy full of androids, Mole People and Slimies. Ruby has skills and tech to help her survive. Besides being a crack shot with a blaster pistol she has shields to protect her from laser attacks AND she can slow time.

Join Ruby on her metaphysical adventure and have a rollicking good time. This is the first of the Ruby series but, as with most series, there was a pilot. It is called Ruby: Tired of the Green Menace? Laura Esterman plays Ruby but, since it was the first story, she has some personality traits that eventually were shaved off by the time the script for Ruby 1 was complete. It is great fun and interesting to see how Fulton originally envisioned Ruby.

Actually there were several pilots made because it was not clear how the radio productions would be brought to air. In America it becomes a long laborious process but Fulton was helped along by listener sponsored radio like the Pacifica Network. It is just wonderful to hear Ruby again. I thought this show was lost to me. I had not heard it since the 90s. I could not even remember the name at first. I spent two days searching ‘female detective who can slow time;” I got nowhere. Then, from the cold recesses of my brain, a background remnant of a memory emerged: Ruby! No Alzheimer’s yet! So, now I poses that warm comfortable satisfied feeling of having all my favorite radio comedy science fiction series available for listening at the touch of a button. Thank you Amazon for the HD 10 and for Audible.

The author of this series, and all the Jack Flinders’ stories, is Thomas Lopez. A tremendously talented writer and recorder of natural sounds. He writes under the name Meatball Fulton. The publisher is ZBS Foundation. ZBS – Zero Bullshit. Sounds like a bunch of hippies who live on a commune. Hippies, yes, sort of, maybe when they first started, today they appear pretty mainstream, but the inspirational spark is still hot.

If you want a fun, funny wild ride of a story get Ruby!

Ruby 1 The Adventures of a Galactic Gumshoe (Audible Audio Edition) Meatball Fulton ZBS Foundation Books Reviews

Originally produced in three minute daily episodes for drive-time radio, Ruby is the ZBS foundations most popular story they've ever created. This audio adventure is very smart, with some good thinking interlaced with a witty story.
It's full of clever characters such as And/Or, the technician with an illegal love for a very special android, Angel Lips, the special android whose programmer gave her free will with mixed results, TJ Teru, the archeologist with a taste for plastic, and Ruby, the tough talking galactic gumshoe with the psychic power to stop time. Ruby is hired to find out who is controlling the media on Suma Nulla, and becomes mixed up with the mole people and The Tookah, a creature with four tentacles, three eyes, a blue mustache and red fez.
Fast-paced, funny, and highly recommended
Created as a radio series in 1982, this humor filled, fast paced, outer space, sci-fi adventure really jazzed up my daily commute. Ruby the Galactic Gumshoe is hired to find out who’s been manipulating the media on the 6-mooned planet Summa Nulla (crossroads of the galaxy, highpoint of nothing), and she’s just the dame for the job. Savvy, tough, and with a well developed sense of irony, none of the weird planetary inhabitants faze her--not the mustachioed informant with tentacle appendages who wants to shake “hands”, not the pun-loving mole creatures who excavate ancient underground cities that keep caving in whenever she’s around, and not the sexy android who sicced slimey genetically engineered assassins on her. Actually Angel Lips (the sexy android) and the slime assassins do exasperate Ruby, but Ruby handles them all with her usual sharp witted determination.

There’s about three hours of audio story with very cool high-tech sound effects, stunning other-world “visuals”, occasional musical interludes by the Android Sisters, and witty repartee worthy of a movie comedy from the 1930’s-40’s. It’s broken up into 3 or 4 minute sections and there’s sometimes a little repetition of plot points since it was originally broadcast in a serial format, but if you also have to keep your mind on something else--like driving--that’s actually an advantage.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy started off as a radio serial. Ruby started off as one also, and, er, it still is. It's the end of the 21st Century on the planet Summa Nulla (the high point of nothing). Ruby is a galactic gumshoe. A good one. As the story begins, Slimies (scaly genetically engineered assasins) are hunting a Frankie (an android) named Angel Lips, who's dressed up like Ruby. Ruby has to figure out why Angel Lips was dressed as her, and why the Slimies were after her.

Along the way, she'll meet T. J. Teru (an archaelologist), the Tookah (an alien with four tentacles, a blue mustache, and a red Fez), the Auroran Utopians Monet and Moonbeam (who live under an economic system inspired by Robert Anton Wilson), Moliere of the Mole People (who's fond of puns), the Russian tecnho-witches Offonoff and Onoffon, and various other characters.

This first set is on 3 CDs. Each CD is about an hour long, with 21 or 22 tracks. Each track is a three minute episode of the show, and many of the episodes have 10 seconds or so of recapping, so be prepared for that. Ruby (Laura Esterman) narrates most of the episodes in present time, with the occasional foreshadowing. The other characters are played by various actors. Unless you have one of those very quiet cars or very good ears (and if you have your windows rolled down, forget about it), you'll have occasionally have difficulty hearing the dialogue on your car's CD player over the music and sound effects, so I recommend listening to it at home instead. My favorite part of this first set are Angel and Angel, the subversive philosophical Frankies known as the Android Sisters.

4 stars rounded up to 5 for the Android Sisters.
